Safe Streets for All & Road Safety Audits

RIPTA was awarded funding from the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program to develop roadway Safety Action Plans on behalf of the state of Rhode Island, and with collaboration from 31 municipalities. The project includes a three-tiered analysis of road safety, including both past crash analysis and predictive analysis, and a wide-reaching community engagement process, with a statewide survey, interactive website, and on-the-ground outreach in each participating community. Ultimately the data analysis and public engagement will feed into the Safety Action Plans and inform recommendations for transportation system improvements in each community.

The Planning Department, together with the Police and School Departments, have been coordinating with RIPTA and their consultant group, Bowman, to compile various data points to identify areas of critical need. The project timeline ran from April 2024 – June 2025. The majority of data analysis and public engagement occurred during the summer of 2024, and the municipal plans was completed early June 2025. The Town Council adopted the final plan and authorized the Planning Department to pursue SS4A Implementation Grant funding on June 23, 2025.

In addition to the SS4A project, Bowman conducted two Road Safety Audits (RSA). The RSA reports identify potential road safety issues at targeted locations and opportunities for improvement, which lays the foundation for pursuing design/construction funds. Representatives from Public Works, Police, Fire, and Planning Departments contributed to the process. Those reports are at the following links:
