Water Supply: Impacts to System Pressure

[ARCHIVED] Water Department

This critical maintenance operation is done yearly to avoid sediment buildup and to keep your water clear.  If your water is discolored, run an exterior spigot until water is clear. Then run water inside, beginning closest to the location the water line enters your home, run inside cold water faucets after removing filters and aerators if you can. It is recommended to run dishwashers and washing machine empty after water is running clear from faucets. Don’t draw water from refrigerator water service until water is running clear at faucets. Check ice cubes in case your freezer was making ice while discolored water was in the lines. There is no health risk from exposure to or contact with the discolored water. If your water appears milky, this is air, and it will clear out of the water if it sits exposed to air for a while.

If you were doing laundry at the time discolored water entered your home, and anything became discolored, the Water Department has a product we can give you that reportedly is effective at removing these stains. You may pick up this product at the Water Department at 100 Fairway Drive, North Kingstown.
